The Dentist’s Guide to a Tooth-Friendly Halloween

October 24, 2025 9:00 am

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year—costumes, laughter, and, of course, mountains of candy. At Stillwater Dentistry, we’d never dream of taking the fun out of it. But we also know how easy it is for sugar to hang around long after the jack-o-lanterns fade. With a few smart choices, you can help your family enjoy the treats and keep everyone’s teeth healthy.

Choose Treats Wisely

Not all candy is created equal. Sticky or chewy sweets—like caramels, gummies, and taffy—cling to teeth and give cavity-causing bacteria plenty of fuel. Hard candies can also be tough on enamel and dental work.

If you have the option, chocolate is the friendliest choice for your smile. It melts away quickly and is easier to rinse from your teeth. Dark chocolate even has less sugar than most other options.

The Trick to Timing

Here’s a Halloween trick that actually helps: it’s better to enjoy candy with a meal—or even just on Halloween night—than to snack on it for days afterward. When you eat sweets with a meal, the extra saliva you produce helps wash away sugar and neutralize acids. Constant nibbling, on the other hand, keeps your mouth in a sugary environment where bacteria thrive.

Keep Braces and Aligners in Mind

If your child is in braces, steer clear of anything sticky or hard that could bend wires or loosen brackets. Opt for softer choices, like plain chocolate or peanut butter cups.

For teens or adults wearing Invisalign®, always remove your aligners before eating candy, and brush or rinse thoroughly before putting them back in. Sugar trapped under aligners can quickly lead to decay—something scarier than any haunted house!

Rinse, Brush, and Floss

After the candy excitement, remind everyone to rinse with water to remove lingering sugar. Brushing soon afterward helps clear away debris and plaque, and flossing ensures nothing stays hidden between teeth. A fluoride rinse before bed can add an extra layer of protection.

What About Leftover Candy?

Once the initial sugar rush has passed, it can help to set limits or donate extra candy. Many local organizations accept Halloween candy donations for care packages—and it’s a great way to teach kids about moderation and giving back.
