October Is National Dental Hygiene Month: Give Your Daily Routine a Closer Look

October 2, 2026 9:00 am

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, making it a good time to look at the habits you repeat every morning and night. Brushing can become something you squeeze in before leaving the house or heading to bed. Meanwhile, the same back teeth or tight spaces may keep getting a quick pass, even when you brush every day.

At Stillwater Dentistry in Rome, Georgia, Dr. Saahil Patel and our team help patients care for their teeth and gums between appointments. As part of that care, we offer routine cleanings, exams, and fluoride treatments. During your visit, we can look at the areas where buildup keeps returning and work through the parts of your home routine that have become difficult.

Brush for the Areas You Usually Miss

Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, giving the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces enough time. However, the tongue side of your lower teeth and the backs of your last molars can be easy to rush past. To reach those areas consistently, try following the same order each time so you clean every section before putting the brush down.

As you brush, use a soft-bristled brush with gentle pressure, angling the bristles toward the gumline. Short strokes help clean along that edge without vigorous scrubbing, which can irritate gums and contribute to wear. If the bristles spread out quickly, ease up on the pressure and bring your brush to your next visit so we can review your technique. Replace it every three to four months, or sooner when the bristles fray.

Clean Between Your Teeth Every Day

Because plaque collects between teeth where toothbrush bristles have trouble reaching, those spaces need daily cleaning too. Floss, interdental brushes, and water flossers offer different ways to reach them. Depending on the spaces between your teeth and any dental work you have, one tool may be easier to handle than another.

When using string floss, curve it around the side of each tooth and move it gently along the surface. If floss repeatedly catches beside a crown or shreds in the same spot, bring it up during your appointment. We can then check for a rough edge or another problem that may be interfering with cleaning.

If handling string floss is difficult, a water flosser may make daily cleaning easier, including around braces or bridgework. As with any tool, the way you use it affects how well it cleans. Once you choose an approach, we can demonstrate how to reach the areas you have been struggling with.

Pay Attention to Repeated Gum Bleeding

If you regularly see blood when you brush or floss, schedule a visit so we can check your gums. Bleeding can accompany inflammation, along with swelling, tenderness, or persistent bad breath. Even while your teeth feel comfortable during meals, gum disease may be developing.

In the meantime, continue cleaning gently rather than avoiding the area altogether. During your exam, we can check for tartar buildup and measure the spaces between your teeth and gums. Depending on what we find, we may recommend a routine cleaning, a deeper cleaning, or additional periodontal care.

Keep Fluoride in the Routine

Fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen enamel as teeth go through daily cycles of mineral loss and repair. While acids from plaque bacteria can weaken the surface, fluoride helps it recover minerals and resist decay. By using fluoride toothpaste consistently, you give your teeth that protection during your regular brushing routine.

In some cases, dry mouth, exposed roots, or repeated cavities may increase the need for additional fluoride protection. Dr. Patel can review those factors and determine whether an in-office fluoride treatment or a prescription product would fit your needs. If your mouth has started feeling dry after a medication change, mention that during your visit as well.

Make the Most of Your Hygiene Appointment

Over time, plaque can harden into tartar that requires professional removal. At your cleaning, we can remove those deposits and check the places where they collect. Along with your cleaning, an exam lets us look for decay and changes in your gum health.

During that appointment, bring up specific difficulties you have at home. For example, your toothbrush may barely fit behind a back molar, or cleaning beneath a bridge may have become frustrating. We can demonstrate a different angle or cleaning tool so you can practice the technique before leaving. If you need ongoing periodontal care, we will also explain how often to return and what those visits will involve.

Dental Hygiene Care in Rome, Georgia

This October, take a closer look at one part of your routine that keeps getting rushed or skipped. For instance, you might give the backs of your molars more brushing time or keep floss beside your toothbrush as a reminder. At your next cleaning, we can check those areas and help you adjust as your teeth and gums change.

If you are due for a cleaning or have noticed recurring gum bleeding, schedule a visit with Stillwater Dentistry in Rome, Georgia. When you come in, bring your questions about the tooth that is hard to reach or the floss that keeps catching.
